Subject: Kmotion is present but not responding...
Hi,
My kflop used to connect, but now it continually stays disconnected. I am using 4.33F and this happened during my upgrade. The error is

kmotion is present but not responding correct problem and restart application.
In order to try and recover I have used the recovery button and follow the instructions but it didn't work. It still says
communication error with Kmotion

I have also uninstalled & reinstalled, changed usb cables, gone through possible forum posts that I could find, rolled back to 4.33c, and done your 5 step "recovery" post

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Rob

Hi,

Could you post exactly what happens at each step of the Flash recovery attempt?

Hi Tom

-press recovery
-select dspkflop.out
-follow instruction 1-3
-it reports 'downloading data' and then 'communication error with kmotion'
-I click ok
-it reports 'kmotion present but not responding correct problem and restart application

I did select for the mach3 plugin to be installed in the program

Thanks

Hi Rob,

I was hoping for more details like that you start off with power off from KFLOP, then you run a particular Version of KMotion, when you turn on KFLOP power the LEDs actually flash, etc... in order to see if there is a misunderstanding on one of the steps.

But I'll assume the steps are being followed correctly and there must be some damage to KFLOP.

Please send us the KFLOP so we can analyze what is wrong and possibly repair/replace it.  Contact our support for a RMA number.

Hi Tom,

Sorry bout that.
-When I start the kflop (power only), the LEDs do not blink
-when I power on the kflop with the usb connected, the LEDs do blink.

When I do the recovery procedure (usb is of course plugged in). Steps 1-3 are followed.
make sure the kflop is off, click ok. The software begins to recover, and it prompts me to turn the kflop on, I turn it on, kflop LEDs blink normally

Thanks Tom, I will contact customer support.

Hi Rob,

We received your KFLOP.  The Flash Recovery sequence worked ok for us.  I'm guessing somehow you were not keeping power off until instructed to power up KFLOP.?   Your previous statement

"(usb is of course plugged in)"

is confusing because KFLOP can receive power through USB if J1 is installed.   So in that case it should not be plugged in.  We tried both ways using USB Power for Recovery and External Power and both worked ok.

Should we send the board back to the address in your email to Support?

Hi Tom,

Thanks for looking at it.
I am glad the kflop is ok. My comment about testing the kflop with the usb unplugged was to test to see if my error was different in regards to seeing if the error was different if it were unplugged.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for looking at it.
Please send it back to the address provided in my rma email request.

I am glad the kflop is ok. My comment about testing the kflop with the usb unplugged was to test to see if my error was different in regards to seeing if the error was different if it were unplugged.  When it was plugged in to the usb it detected the kflop, and when it wasn't plugged into the USB, it didn't detect (different error).
I am also aware of when to use the USB power jumper, and when not to. I installed the jumper to both pins when I want to use USB power.

During recovery, I would also wait a significant amount of time 1-2 minutes with the power off on the kflop,  when it instructed me to have it off. During this time, I ensured there was 0 voltage on the kflop power by measuring it with a dmm. I click ok on the software to continue recovery, and them it told me to power up the kflop, so I did so.

When I get the kflop back, after testing it on my machine, and if it doesn't work on my machine pc, I will try installing it on another computer.

Thanks for your help.

Let me know if you have any service/shipping  charges for me in testing this.

Thanks,

Rob

Hi Rob,

We are returning the KFLOP.  There is no charge.

I still don't understand why the recovery didn't work for you.  The only thing I can think of is that your computer takes too long to connect USB devices.  On Power up KFLOP blinks its LEDs for up to ~3seconds waiting for a Recovery request to be sent from the PC by KMotion.exe.  If a Recovery request is not received it then executes the normal Firmware and User Programs.   KFLOP will skip the recovery phase if it detects no USB cable connection.  It will also skip the recovery phase if it receives an normal communication request (ie KMotionCNC is running).  KMotion.exe will send the Recovery request as soon as it sees the USB device connection.  That's why I was asking for observation clues like:

#1 when does the PC beep indicating a USB connection has been made with respect to power applied?
#2 how long do the KFLOP LED's blink?
#3 When does the Downloading message occur

But anyway I believe the board is recovered.  You shouldn't need to do another Flash recovery unless User Program with a bug that causes KFLOP to crash is Flashed into KFLOP.  Or possibly a loss of power while Flashing firmware.
